Seeing and Being Seen 2013 (photography, mixed media installation and performance)

A collaboration with Art Psychotherapy Trainee Natalie Chesterman for Unimagined Maps, the Goldsmiths MA Art Psychotherapy exhibition 2013.

We used a collaborative, performative approach (taking photographs of each other) to explore a power dynamic between observer and observed. We anticipated the performance might become a difficult negotiation of controlling and losing control of one’s public image, and aimed to frame the process within therapeutic-style boundaries:

A can photograph B for one hour; B can choose the time and place for the photography; B can choose to comply with or avoid the photographer; A will edit the photographs and present the artwork to B as a ‘gift’; B will decide what will be exhibited from the artwork gift; A and B will collaborate in the installation of the artwork gifts.
